The NHL Midwinter: Winter Classic, Stadium Series and the Trade Deadline

ProJersey Hub - The NHL Midwinter: Winter Classic, Stadium Series and the Trade Deadline

The 2026/27 NHL season is the first 84-game season since 1993/94, and it started on 29 September 2026 with five games. That makes the midwinter stretch — the outdoor games, All-Star weekend and the trade deadline — the busiest part of the calendar, and it is where a season usually gets decided.

Here is the full winter roadmap, league-wide.

The Winter Classic

The marquee date is 31 December 2026, when the Colorado Avalanche visit the Utah Mammoth at Rice-Eccles Stadium on the University of Utah campus in Salt Lake City. It is the third outdoor game of the season and the first Winter Classic staged in Utah — a market that only got its team recently, which makes a New Year's Eve outdoor game there something new rather than a repeat.

Outdoor games exist for a specific reason in shirt terms: they generate a colourway that does not appear anywhere else in the season. If you want the exception rather than the regular shirt, this is the fixture that produces it. Utah's Mammoth range sits at 46 items, and Colorado's Avalanche range at 57.

All-Star weekend, rebuilt

The 2027 All-Star Game moves away from the conference format and runs a five-team, 3-on-3 tournament on 6 February at UBS Arena, with teams representing the United States, Canada, Sweden, Finland and a World side. The Skills Competition is the night before, 5 February.

For anyone buying around the weekend, the useful thing to know is which markets it puts on television. UBS Arena is on Long Island, so the New York Rangers range — 85 items, the largest hockey collection in the store — is the one that moves.

The trade deadline

Monday 1 March 2027 is the last day for roster moves before the playoff push. It matters more this season than most, because the league added two games per team to the schedule without pushing the finish later — the regular season still ends 10 April — so the compressed run-in makes deadline positioning unusually important.

The team to measure everyone against is Carolina. The Hurricanes won the 2026 Stanley Cup, beating Vegas in six games, and they did it the hard way: a 16–3 playoff record, the fewest games needed to win the Cup since Edmonton in 1988. Jordan Staal took the Conn Smythe as the oldest winner of the award, and Rod Brind'Amour became the first person in 70 years to win the Cup as both player and coach for the same club. The Hurricanes range carries 66 items.

The teams this window belongs to

Between the outdoor games and the deadline, eleven markets carry most of the hockey calendar. Full ranges for each:

Hockey pricing runs in three bands. The Breakaway replica is $85.99, the Premium build is $92.90, and youth sits between $78.99 and $83.90. Both bands appear in the Rangers range — Adam Fox's home Breakaway at $85.99 against Igor Shesterkin's home Premium at $92.90 — which makes them a straightforward way to compare the two before deciding.

Sizing note for the winter months

Hockey jerseys are the loosest cut in sport. A men's S starts at 40–43 inches / 102–109 cm chest with a 30-inch / 76 cm body and a 24-inch sleeve — roughly one to two sizes roomier than a soccer or basketball shirt with the same label. Order your true chest size and do not size up unless you specifically want an oversized look. The size guide has the full chart, and new hockey stock lands on the NHL new-season page.
